Aalst Carnival

Aalst is famous in Belgium for its carnival festivities, celebrated every year in February. Every year, a Prince of the Carnival is elected, who is allowed to “rule” the city for three days. A large parade crosses the city on Sunday, where 70 groups of costumed participants and parade cars pull huge floats, each with their own bizarre themes relevant to current events. This year, one group had President Bush standing at a podium and the spectators were given shoes to throw at his head! To view some of the carnival pictures, see the link below:
