Carnival Binche

Gilles at Binche

Gilles at Binche

An annual event, the Binche carnival is unique to the small village if Binche in the heart of French speaking Belgium. Although the preparations begin in the winter and the festivities start two weeks prior to the big day, the Gille (Societies) are allowed to wear their Gille costume on Mardi Gras day only.  On fat Tuesday, all the societies gather in the centre of Binche and dance to the tune of the drums and the brass bands. The Gille members take turn wearing their heavy yet impressive hats covered in ostrich feathers.  The highlight of the day is when all the Gille members throw blood oranges to the spectators and hurl the oranges through all open doors and windows not protected by a metal mesh. Dimitri with his fast reflexes was the star in catching the rain of delicious blood oranges which came flying through the air. Relevant pictures here.
